Historical Replication Projects: Preserving the Past with Composite Materials
At Architectural Mall, we specialize in replicating historical architectural elements using advanced composite materials like fiberglass and synthetic stone. These materials not only preserve the original look and detail but also offer long-term durability without the decay associated with wood or metal. Below are three standout restoration projects where we brought deteriorating architecture back to life — all while keeping history intact.
From Rotting Wood to Timeless Strength — School Entrance Restoration
Challenge: An aging school entrance had severely deteriorated over time. The wooden cornice, columns, and railings were so decayed they began falling apart at the touch — clear signs that simple repair or repainting wouldn’t be enough.
Solution: We used fiberglass and synthetic stone to faithfully replicate the original cornice and architectural features, preserving the building’s historic charm while ensuring long-term durability. By referencing archived photographs and even the original outlines left on the brick, we achieved a seamless recreation that stays true to the original design — without the risk of future rot or deterioration.

Featured on HGTV’s Windy City Rehab — Cornice & Staircase Replication
Challenge:
In a recent season of Windy City Rehab with Alison Victoria, we were called in to replicate a deteriorating metal cornice and a lost wooden staircase in a historic property.
Solution: We performed an on-site 3D scan of the damaged cornice and recreated it using fiberglass, preserving the look while changing the paint scheme for a refreshing exterior. The original wooden staircase had been mistakenly discarded. Using photos and interior wall marks, we recreated the design, making slight updates to ensure it met current building codes.

Mesón Sabika – Restoring a Naperville Landmark
Challenge: Built in 1847, the estate that houses Mesón Sabika is a true Naperville icon. But the exterior wooden columns and bases had begun to rot, threatening the appearance and structure of the entrance.
Solution: Architectural Mall replicated the original column profiles using fiberglass columns, maintaining the classic aesthetic while preventing further decay. The results preserved the historic beauty of the mansion — with materials that will stand the test of time.

Why Composite Materials?
Composite materials like fiberglass and synthetic stone offer the perfect solution for historical restorations. Unlike traditional wood or metal, they won’t rot, crack, or rust, making them ideal for long-term durability. These materials can also be crafted with incredible precision, allowing us to replicate even the most intricate architectural details from the original design. And best of all, they require minimal maintenance — no need for constant repainting or repair.
Choosing composites means you can preserve the historical authenticity of a structure without sacrificing performance. Whether you’re restoring a courthouse, mansion, school, or storefront, Architectural Mall is here to help you preserve history the smart way.
